Costa Calma-Fuerteventura

I’ve done a lot of research lately on international destinations for my family. We are taking our first international trip as a family in 2014  and since I speak “un poco de Español,” my research has involved more spanish-speaking destinations. So if you’re looking for a family escape that serves up a seriously beach-centric experience, complete with plenty of fun and the all-important combo of sun, sea and sand, Fuerteventura checks off all the right boxes.

As part of the sun-baked Canary Islands, a Spanish-owned archipelago located just off the west coast of Africa, Fuerteventura enjoys a temperate year-round climate with scorching summers and mild winters. Watch out for soaring temperatures during the peak season of June through August, when the barometer regularly reaches the 80s and 90s (high 20s and 30s Celsius). For a family holiday, if you are like me with a young child in tow, it may be better to travel in the early or late part of the season – such as May or September – when the temperatures are generally a little more bearable and there is usually still plenty of kids’ entertainment on offer too.

As for things to see and do, Fuerteventura is famous for its beaches, so you can certainly expect to spend plenty of time building sandcastles and splashing around with the little ones. The island is home to many high quality family hotels, and from here you can book various day excursions with the kids such as jeep safaris and boat trips. The Pirates Adventure is a particular family favorite. Set sail onboard a fabulous schooner, complete with towering masts and billowing sails, and head for the horizon to discover the island’s striking coastline and to spot whales and dolphins in their natural habitat.

Corralejo is a great resort for families, with plenty of local activities and great child-friendly hotels. Costa Caleta is another hit. Its horseshoe-shaped bay and sheltered beach means it offers typically calm waters – perfect for little paddling feet. So whatever style of family holiday you fancy, from laid-back and lazy to get-up-and-go, Fuerteventura serves up plenty of family fun and unforgettable holiday experiences.
